weird problem on 91 500SL, need help!

Board Brothers, I have a weird problem that I need you help on. Just returned from a 1000 mile road trip. Set the cruise at 90, and she ran like a top, except for one thing. In the last hour of the road trip, I turned on my lights since the weather was turning dark. I noticed a spray coming on my windshield. I pulled over to see what was going on. Turns out that washer fluid was spraying from both headlight wipers. I understand that these only operate when the lights are on, and you clean your windshield. I had not operated my wiper. I turned the car off and on, and same thing, lights on ='s wiper fluid spraying from both headlight wipers.
Any ideas??

Thanks,

Matt

Are the headlight wipers in their "parked" position?

I believe the headlight washers continue to operate if the headlight wipers somehow fail to return to the parked position.

Yes, the headlights must be on for the headlight washers to engage.

A word of caution: A search on this site will turn up a recall that I think is no longer open. It replaces the washer pumps with a version that will not overheat and catch fire when run dry for extended periods of time.

Most of us have unplugged our headlight washer pumps due to problems such as this.

headlight washers

They are in the parked position, and after filling the washer tank (over a gallon) with just a few tests of the lights today, it is low again.
I have not yet crawled under the hood, but is disabling these things, just as easy as unplugging them, or is there a fuse, or..??

Thanks

Matt

They are easy to unplug. The reservoir is in a bracket such that it lifts up for access. You will see two little pumps attached directly to the reservoir through rubber grommets. Each pump has a wire and a rubber hose. You can't remove the pump without replacing it with a plug, but you can unplug the wire. I THINK the one towards the front is the one for the wipers. The other one is for the windshield of course...

problem solved (at least temp.)

Thanks Speace for the advice. Just went out to the garage and figured it out. Now I just need a mop for the garage as I had to lift out the pumps to get to the wires. It turned out to be the back one.
