What is a fair price for a 1980 450 SL, bright yellow with 4100 (not a typo 4100) miles? What would you look for as proof of the 4100 miles? Could such low mileage actually be detrimental if it went for long periods without use and maintenance?

Price For 1980 450 SL

GJWJR,

On the low mileage, yes it could be detrimental if it went for long periods of time without use or maintenance. I bought a 1980 450SL once that had 17,000 miles and it had been sitting for two years, you name it anything that could go wrong, did. Drove it for about a year before I got all the bugs out of it.

Proof of 4100 miles, any service records? Check for the original tires and top, check VIN numbers with DMV for history, look for wear on items such as windows switches, turning signal, etc.

Price for a 1980 450 SL with 4100 miles. Wow that's low!!! I would say 20-30k.

Keep us posted, would love to see pictures of the car.

Was the gas drained out? If not it's probably varnish by now. Fuel injectors don't like sitting that long, probably need new ones. Engine and transmission gaskets could have dried up. Air conditioner could need new parts. Check the brake lines. IF it's original and in good shape...$20,000-25,000.00. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Thanks for the input. Based on similar advice I decided to pass on the car. The seller was a little high also--he would not go below $27-28,000.
