My old signature..........
30 SMILES per gallon. I drive a clapped out Honda Civic 45Km's a year. I deserve to drive my SL in the summer. Screw the cost. Besides, Cocaine is far more expensive. Everyone needs a habit.

Your Civic has the clap?! Has it been hanging around with that surly bunch of ricers behind the Pizza Hut?

Pete...that W140 500SEL weighed 5500 lbs...with nobody or anything in it!! Add to that more power consuming systems than you can shake a stick at and 16 years and almost 180,000 miles and 10mpg is almost respectable.

I went to fill up my 6.9. After the bill hit $90 dollars the pump stopped and the tank wasn't full. I may not think about it while driving but that sure hurt.

my '96 SL500 beats my '86 300SDL
I got 24 to 26 mpg on a recent highway trip
(Idaho, Wyoming, Utah). Engine is just loafing along at 80 mph--about 2K rpm). Even at 100 gets nearly 20. Diesel fuel not being what it used to be, the SDL only gets 22, and works to get up to 100. At 80 mph, its at 3500 rpm. And that convertible top was really sweet in the Tetons and Utah's south central canyons.... Cheers, Richard Whitney |

oooweee!!
My 89 560sl is getting about 15MPG on premium. I offset this cost by burning straight jet fuel in my 300D. Shes been running strong for 2.5 years and 60,000 miles....all Free!

My '84 380SL gets around 22-23 mpg on the road, at 70 mph, w/cruise control engaged. As I recall, back in '68, when I graduated from college and bought my first car, a '68 GTO, which got worse mileage than the 380, and I was paying around $.40 a gallon. Crunching the numbers: An Army second lieutenant made $325 a month, plus $110 jump pay, plus $47.88 subsistence, and a little later, $65 hostile fire pay. Now, 40 years later, I make more than 10 times that, and gas has only gone up 10 times , so I'm ahead, right? So, what the heck, enjoy it. Cheers, Ned.

Well- like i heard before- pretend you have a egg on the accelerator...but the 450 is a gas hog. my 380 is reasonable. but the 560 is a major guzzler. that is why the prices are falling on all- time to buy? well, I do, and they all say they can't afford the gas consumption. What a shame for a class act car- I would rather eat hotdogs and drive a 450 before i got into a miada.

Fast forward 40 years and I predict we'll be driving classic cars with compressed air tanks in the trunk just to retain the old-time feel and engine sounds while everyone else has fuel cell based white goods to travel in.

I wish I had a source for that surplus jet fuel. I'd be driving my 300TD a lot more if I did!

I drove my 99 SL500 350 miles round trip from Jax to Orlando with the cruise control set at 79, it average 26 mpg. hard top on 72,000 miles on the clock with the original plugs, it translates to $50.00 worth of fuel at $4.23 a gallon.

I work with a 50ish year old woman whose husband restored the Triumph they had while dating in college. I suggested that she do this with the Triumph but she swears that it can get 40MPG on the highway. That car is so light![/QUOTE]
