87 560SL Potentail Electrical Problem

Today, for the first time after a long winter, I took my 87 560SL for a ride. The car sounds great and it drove nicely. I loved it. Now I know once again why I bought this machine about 10 years ago. After a few miles driving, and to my surprise I started to hear the sound of static coming thru the left side speakers. The radio was off and the air conditioning was also off.

I think I have a problem. Has anyone had a similar problem? If not, what do you suggest i do first to solve this issue. By the way, I am an Advertising Creative Director, and consequently have very little mechanical ability.

I could use your help and/or suggestions.

BenF

The radio is never actually totally "off". So although you may have switched it off, power is still applied to some of its' circuits until you cut the power by removing the ignition switch. The static is happening because some of the electronic parts inside the radio are failling ( capacitors ). You'll need to have the radio repaired or replaced with a modern unit. If you insist on keeping it all original, www.beckerautosound.com does repairs.
