2003 SL500 stuck in park

My 2003 SL500 just started sticking in park and it is hard sometimes impossible to get it in drive. Is this common for a car with 17,533 miles.
It is out of warranty but i hope to rectify this next week.
Are ther any suggestions as to how to get this fixed at a reasonable cost.
