Rag top window
Hi , i have a 560 sl '86 and i tinted all my windows but not the soft top window. So now i want to take it to a shop and have him put a new window in and tinted to match the rest. The top is in very good shape, it's just the window that i want done. So what the trick to get this done? what questions do i ask them to make sure i'm not getting shafted? One guy said he will do it with the roof up on the car and said he wants me standing there while he does it rather then leave the car with him so he won''t get blamed if the paint gets marked or what ever and really i don't blame him and i am ok with that. when i get the new window in i'm always going to put a rag in between so when i fold it down it takes a nice fold when it sets in place and they won't rub together. Thanks Louis

I'd like to know how he puts in a new window w/o removing the top.

Yeah, me too. I'd expect he's going to apply some sort of stick-on tint overlay, or maybe spray the plastic with a coating? I know one thing: ain't no way he's going to remove those windows and sew in tinted ones with the top on the car. This has been discussed here many times. However, please update us on what you end up with, who knows, perhaps a 'miracle stitcher' has been invented since I last looked into the subject.

I've never seen it, but I suppose you could install a zippered-in window with the top on the car.

Keep in mind that those windows will fold in half when you lower the top. Generally you don't have to worry about that with window tint. Make sure something is used that will fold and unfold many times and still look good.

Hey Louis,
I've never seen typical window tint material applied to a soft top's window. For what it's worth some of the manufacturers for Jeep CJ, YJ or TJ soft tops are making the plastic windows in what they call Sun Block (some as high as 31%). Perhaps the tinted window material is available in bulk? Many years ago when I had a soft top window replaced on a Fiat 124 the top had to be removed from the frame. But maybe things have changed as that was in the late 70's Phil |
