Pressure 'Whoosh' when removing gas cap.

I am not having any problems with my 89'560SL except I am questioning why I do not get a pressure 'whoosh' sound when taking off the gas cap? is this normal for this model? ...........I also have an 88' 190E which 'whooshes' like crazy. Your comments please.

not sure if this is against the rules of this forum
but here is a thread about this issue, http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/1376110-pressure-gas-tank.html

hope this helps you, it looks like its normal because of the nonvented gas caps

If I'm reading all of this correctly, I "should" have pressure when removing the fuel cap? Mine does not. I have been "suspecting" that I still have a very small vacuum leak. Could it possibly be "at" the cannister.

Thanks!

the venting system on the SL's prevents the major swish noise. The SL gas tank being midship needs a more elaborate venting system as to not flood the passengers with gas fumes

Glad to hear from you and others that this appears normal, what you say makes sense, so what other method of venting did they devise, do you know?

the venting on mine is a series of rubber hoses at the top half of the tank which eventually run under the car to an exhaust port just forward the left rear axle. When I smelled fumes in mine I tracked it to a clamp on one of the hoses had let loose and my vent on the underside was clogged with dirt. I think this system was upgraded a bit from the sytem on my 72, but basically was the same

Mine does that, too. I assumed that the fuel system is designed to be pressurized like that.

Pressure 'Whoosh' when removing gas cap.

The whoosh indicates that your fuel evaporation control system is working just fine. In fact it will not pass smog in California if it doesn't whoosh, as I just recently learned.

As I understand it, Mercedes has a valve in the fuel charcoal canaster line that increases the pressure in the the fuel tank to reduce evaporation of fuel. I had to have all the rubber hoses in my fuel system replaced because one of them leaked.

My quote from the thread at the above link........

"Yes, normal. When it reaches a certain pressure a check valve opens bleeding off the excess into a line that ends up at the charcoal cannister. On non cannister cars, it just dumps overboard."

Check your check valve or relate hoses.
