Question 1987 560SL Power Door Lock

The power door lock on the driver's side of our 560SL operates when the key is turned on the passenger side, and also works when the lock is manually pressed in on the passenger side. However, when the key is turned on the driver's side, the power lock does not activate on either door. Likewise, when the lock is pressed in manually on the drivers side. I am guessing there is a loose connection or switch failure. Questions for this group (from a pretty limited mechanic)

-how do I access the inside of the door?
-anyone know if there is a part that can be replaced without installing a new lock and motor?

Thanks!

Hi , If you do a Fourm search for "Door Panel Removal" you will find step by step instructions. After you get them off look for disconnected vacuum lines.

But first how does the locking system work from the trunk? there are many lines that go to the vacuum pump on the passenger side under the gas cap door. lines that come from the trunk lock and fuel door are these working? Find the pump and see if every line is connected and the trunk and fuel door lock and unlock. if hey do then it is on to the door panels. Removing the panels is best done with a wedge they will help you remove the door clips. The door panels are make from a thick pressboard that over the years has probably gotten soft and must be handled carefully. Be gentle with all removals and don't loose the trim screws they are hard to replace.

Also first remove ,very carefully the two triangular chrome/plastic covers that are inside at the connection of the driving mirrors. that is the first thing you remove very carefully as to not break the little plastic hooks that hold it in place

Forum search and the first posting of photo info will be a great help.

Best of luck. Jack M. 1986 560SL

Thank you very much

I find the hardest thing to do is to properly word a search to get the information I'm looking for. "Door panel removal" sounds about right!

Trunk

I failed to mention that the gas door locking device seems to be working fine. I haven't checked the trunk lock yet.
