1966 230 SL
Since I am fairly new to this site I will post a few pictures of my 1966 230 SL. I bought the car in Nov 2008. A few months prior to that it was purchased to resale from the 2nd owner that had the car since the late 1960s. She stopped driving the car in the mid 1980s the car had about 56,200 actual miles at that time. Several oil change stickers a few documents in the glove box and the Ca title state this was the actual milage.
The person I bought it from had it listed on ebay after he got it running again and it turned out to be less than 15 miles from my house in Pa. The car didn''t sell for 2 months and I was the only person to go look at the car. The guy lowered the price by $5k from his original listing so I took my wife to look at it. She actually said "ok you can get it" after she saw the car. It came with hard top only with soft top compartment option 5 on the data plate. I bought a used frame and had the soft top installed. The mounting bolts were in the compartment already so it was a straight forward costly install with no modifications. The car was repainted some time over 20 years ago and still looks good. The interior is original caviar MB tex.

Your car looks OK from the pictures you have. Did you find any running problems from all the time it sat unused? These cars need to be driven regularly to work well.
One problem I had with mine ( same year car ) is the rear wheel cylinders would start to rust after a year or two. A few months of winter storage is all it takes. I had to replace them a couple of times until I replaced the rear axle with a disc brake LSD. Replacing the brake fluid before winter storage every year helped out a lot - maybe twice the life span. My car is highly modified using all vintage parts from the time period. It came with a ZF 5 speed but I put power steering in it. The engine is from a 250SE - it was in the car when I bought it almost 20 years ago. I put a 280SL clutch and pressure plate in it because the stock 230SL clutch was slipping due to the power it puts out. I use a 230SL cam shaft with early 230SL header pipes. The cylinder head is ported and polished with a ballanced short block. I'm getting 180 PSI compression from it. I put a 300SE dual point distributor in it along with a red coil and ballast resistor. A few other tricks and it hauls ass pretty good. |

The car runs great and starts with just a touch of the key. I changed all fluids including the brake fluid. Also changed the coolant hoses. It has some oil leaks that I would like to fix but I'm not that far yet. For now I will just check the oil. I keep my cars in a heated garage also.

Heated storage is great as long as it stays in there all winter. Not thatyou would do this to a car like that but if you were to drive the car in a lot of salt and crap it would all melt into the car every time you put it away. In that case you're better off leaving it in unheated storage.
Let me know if you need anything for it or mechanical help. Dan |

I wouldn't dare drive it in the winter. It stays covered with my 4.5 keeping it company. My wife jokes with me that I tuck in my cars every time I go to the garage.

Nice SL. I'm not to far from you...currently in Sarver, getting ready to purchase a place in Tarentum. I'll be taking my SL out to the car shows this summer...I hope to see your SL at some as well.

Nobby, I like your 280 with the euro bumpers and lights. It looks in very nice condition.

I drive by the exxon every day on my way to work. My car is not the one you saw in Crannberry. I saw it 2 days ago. The one you saw is a rusty 280 SL. I stopped to look at it. By the way if you need a good mechanic I know one in Sewickley (Bob Kunsak)that is excellent. The guy at that exxon works on them but I have heard good and bad about him. I will keep going to Bob.
