There are some very special tools required to join the timing chain together.
The cam timing can be checked/set at 45 degrees BTDC. At 45 BTDC, both of the camshafts can be rotated without danger of damaging a valve, the cams are rotated with a wrench on a hex-form on each cam. There are 2 holes in each timing chain sprocket that will line up with holes on the front cam bridge. The original MB tool was a one piece deal that curved like a "C" shape and engaged into both holes, I believe they went to a 2-pin arrangement now, so a set of 4 to do both heads at once. Maybe 4 pin punched would work OK for this.
Depnding on the current state of the motor, you may have a difficult time turning the engine to 45 BTDC without touching a valve to a piston, so proceed with caution. Take out the sparl plugs if you haven't already and turn the crank slowly, stop if you meet resistance. You may end up removing rockers to keep the valves "up" so you don't damage anything.
