Another erratic fuel gauge

The needle on the fuel gauge of my 380sl was jumping around when the gas level went below 1/2 tank. So I assumed it was the sender, and replaced it.

However, the problem still exists, and after reading some posts in other forums, which I should have read before, I have to conclude the cause of the problem is a loose or corroded grounding wire somewhere behind the instrument cluster.

So, before I remove the cluster, I was wondering if someone could tell me which wires are grounds, how they're connected, and where they lead.

Thanks very much in advance.

Benz has standardized on using Brown for the ground lead. That's not to say that everything Brown is a ground. A lot of troubles can be fixed by making sure the ground points are good and tight. I even like to dab a little electrical contact grease on them, to prevent future corrosion problems, after cleaning up th econnections.

Good luck,
Scott

Adding a ground wire from the cluster to the a metal place on the dash frame has been effective. The top of speedo cluster serves to bridge the ground connection between the cluster halves. Clean the connections here and it is a good places to add the extra ground wire.

Add a ground from the cluster to something steel on the chassis under the dash. I used a blade connector so the cluster can be removed.

Thanks for the idea, but I can't tell which wire or post on the dash you connected the new ground to? Did you do this to solve an erratic fuel gauge problem or some other problem?
