107 sl spoiler
Does anyone know where to get the 107 sl spoiler; the rubber/composite type that goes right at the top of trunk? I see these around occaisionally. Also, where these and original option, or only after-market?

I believe they are original only on the Euro spec 500SL of the early 80's.

They were fitted standard to the euro 500 SL as already said but if you want to keep your 300 SL looking original, don't think about it. There were valid aerodynamic reasons they were fitted to the 500 SL. Because of the 300 SL's lesser performance, the spoiler is superfluous and the extra weight/drag will probably slow you down and almost certainly devalue your car.

Hello AAL & Pete S
I´m sorry but I desagree with Peter S. This Rear Spoiler is a unique and original peace launched by Mercedes in SL and SLC 450 5.0 in 1978, and used and 80´s 500 SL and SLC models . This equipment can be used without any problem about weight and drag. Your effect is much more esthetic. (the aerodynamic effect will be feel in 80 Mph and above). I think, in my opinion that AAL will not participate in any drag race or grand prix race to feel all rear spoiler Weight and drag effect !! ALL, if you decide to install this rear spoiler, do not forget about the original front spoiler, used on this same SL & SLC models. I have a SLC here in Brazil, and everybody ask to me where I bought this because they want !! And I told that came to car, instaled by last owner ! I am sorry about my poor english ok !! Here is a picture about my car.... If you want to see more pics, click below.. http://gallery.mbnz.org/gallery/showlink.asp?CatID=244&parentID=42&subname=450_SLC&parentname=R107_SL,SLC_Class Regards,

Hi AAL and Mcarboni,
Great to see other views, which is what makes this forum so interesting. My view, IMHO, is that cars (esp. MB) look far better left alone to look as they did when came off the production line. Again, IHMO, the spoiler that Mercedes fitted to their later cars did just that; spoiled the look and the purity of the line. It's the same thing when owners fit after-market wheels (or 8 hole instead of 15 hole wheels). The car ceases to look "right." If you are not bothered by "originality" then it's fine to go ahead and fit all these things, but to purists, like me - no. By the way Mcarboni, your English is great, obrigado! And far better than my Portuguese... Good luck AAL with your choice. PeteS |

Plusses, minuses and another facet...
I have a rear spoiler on my Euro 1985 500 SL AMG (Full skirts, wheels and the spoiler. After 15 years, the AMG paint job is cracked and needs to be refinished. There is also rust on one of the 7 holes they put in the body to attach it. It's glued, screwed and bolted on. I am having trouble getting it off. Just note that it can be a pain and there is no going back without a new trunk lid and whatever else to get it painted and such. I think they look tacked on, unless painted, but then it will crack because it's rubber. I don't think I would add one unless adding the front spoiler as well, but to each his own!
Steve

After thinking about it, I'm not going to put one on. I like them for the cars that came with them, but my car didn't come with a front spoiler, and I don't think a rear spoiler would look good without the front also. I think it's best for me to keep the car original.

Good decision ! If you do not Intend to install a front spoiler with a rear spoiler and your respective fix original details and painted parts like me, Steve Gutman and others, maintain your car original !! But if one day you decide reverse your decision, install this 2 parts, and do not worry about aerodynamics, weight and drag !! Your car has a excelent Engine !! You will not feel nothing about aerodynamics effects with weight and drag of this instaled parts, in any road and street performance !! I just want to tell one thing !! Everybody here is right and correct, because all of us has the same feeling !! Restore and maintain all the memories about one of the most and best cars designed and produced in the whole world !! This "Star" is a dream, and the best thing in our lives, is have a dream and realize it !! When we talk about a dream, we mean Mercedes Benz! Congratulations you all about your Dream Car !! Nice to meet you all guys and Success !!

MCARBONI,
Thanks. By the way, your car is beautiful. I actually prefer the slc to the sl, but good 72,73 ones are almost non-existant here I think. One more thing. I have noticed that your car and other real european models don't have the additional "vertical" bumper additions on them like mine does. Does anyone know anything about removing these? |

AAL,
MCarboni is a good friend of mine and in fact we met during a discussion in one of the forums here and he has sent me your last post regarding the "bumper-guards" on US SL's. On 71/72/73 107's you can remove the bumper guards by simply undoing the nuts/bolts behind the bumper blade. You will notice that there are holes on the rubber strip behind the guards so you will have to replace the strip. The replacement one will simply mount to the bumper as the old one minus the holes and voila, euro bumpers. Same goes for front a rear. Regards, Joe Brasileiro |
