1996 sl600 transmission fluid check

What is the correct technique for checking the transmission fluild level on a 1996 sl600 mercedes? I purchased a key and dipstick but I'm not sure that I'm reading the dipstick correctly. Should the dipstick be pushed all the way in or I stop once I feel resistance?

You should be able to feel it "bottom out" on the pan. This is where it should be when you check it. As always, make sure you have run it for at least 20 minutes, run the gearshift through the ranges while letting it idle and check at idle.

Yes don't force the stick, it should stick out a couple of inches when you feel the tip of the stick touch bottom. What works perfectly for me on my 96 is top the trans off cold to the bottom mark on the stick. Check the trans hot and it should be at the top mark on the stick.

Not to bring up a problem but the 96 722.6 transmission was the first year and very prone to problems. If you ever have any problems with this replace the transmission with one from a 1999+ V8 or V12 vehicle.
