deck lid

This is probably a dumb question but on my 86 300SL is the deck lid supposed to stay open when lifted up or did a PO not install springs or something? My 81 SDL stays up just fine. Oh I went to a local junk yard pull it yourself place yesterday and they had an 86 300E, no motor but I did get some hardware for the fenders and a jack. It had an emergency kit but I'm not sure if mine's supposed to have one or not if so where is it stored? Thanks.Greg.And Happy Veterans Day Tomorrow!
