Cluster needs to come out to reach two bolts for the steering tube.

Steering Wheel Noise

Just got the replacement part in and am going to do the work this weekend. I have read where it is possible to just remove the circlips out of the steering column (below the steering wheel) and you can move the steering shaft enough that you can remove the steering coupling after the socket head bolts have been removed. Does this sound correct?

If this is correct that once the coupling bolts have been removed and the circlips are removed that no other items have to be taken apart or removed...ie; steering shaft housing at the floor board, gas pedal, turn signal items, horn wires, bolts holding the steering column housing in place?

I am prepared to do whatever is necessary but if I can (Once the above circlips, coupling bolts are removed I can do everything from underneath. I have acess to a lift so this would be much easier.

Please let me know what you think.

Paul

Steering Wheel Noise

Well Guys I have to be honest.

1. The lift that I usually has a 63 chevrolet on it and we are in the process of installing a crate motor, so I thought I would tackle this project in the drive.

2. Wrong, As I started to try and turn the first allen head bolt it started to strip. I do not have a torch plus it scares me to think I might start the thing on fire....I do have good insurance........

3. Took it to a new mechanic that I might a short while back. He was willing to use my coupler and only charged me labor....$180....thought that was pretty reasonable.

4. He drops the steering box and he said the whole job was relatively straightforward...No real issues....he did do a minor adjustment to the gear box.... one (1 or 2 Teeth) off??

So all is well and it drives....Fantastic!!!!!!

Sounds like you made the right decision on this one. If you had stripped the bolt it would have been a real nightmare. Sure is nice to have a tight steering system.
