1996 SL500 How to acquire codes for the top?

Hi all.
I have a 1996 SL500. The VIN number says 1996, the car has the round diagnostic plug in engine compartment as in pre 1996.

How do I get the fault codes for the soft top system?

The roll bar and top switch (the hard top looking switch) have steady red lights. The top doesn’t move. Roll bar does not move.

I have an Autel code reader. I was able to reset Fault 33 in component A54 (front passenger side airbag sensor). Not able to see anything about the soft top system.

I see people has posted how to read codes by number of blinks? Is this the only way? If so, how do I do it?
