Take your SL to a body shop and ask them to 'roll' the fenders. If you do not you may have damage if the tire catches the fender. The R129 in later years came with the fenders flared to allow for the larger staggered wheels and tires. Cost should be under $200.00.

Where specifically is the tire rubbing?

What tire size and backspacing / ET offset are you running? My 97 SL320 has 18" thick spoke AMG Monoblocks from the factory as part of the AMG Sport package.

Front 245 40 18 ( I think the ET is 35 )

Rear 275 40 18 ( I think the ET is 41 )
