I have a 1987 560sl with 93K miles. It makes a soft but distinct squealing noise which sounds like it is coming from under the hood between about 1400 and 1800 rpm, but only in gear and when the car is moving, not revved and braked in gear or revved in neutral. We first thought it was a fan belt but that's not it. The mechanics are stumped, though they have not been able to put it on a dynameter. The noise is more annoying than threatening. Anyone had a similar experience?

I have a 1977 450sl 103k mi. and I have noticed a similar squeel. It sounds like a brake pad wear indicator but it has nothing to do with braking. It only occurs while moving and during acceleration. I have not been able to isolate it either. I will be watching this thread with hope.

I hear something like that.I have a 1987 560SLI was thinking it might be a flange on the exhaust pipes that sometimes has to be tightened. I'll check CD.
