'92 500SL Hard start and Hesitation on soft accelleration
My 92 500SL intermittently misses for a couple of seconds when I first hit the gas. This is annoying and seems to be defying my trusted local MB shop. They have performed a full tune-up, replaced a couple of injectors, the throttle body and TP switches. The problem has lessened only slightly... One catch about the problem is that it does not happen when the car is fully warmed up, nor when it is cold...
Another thing I have noticed is that it is hard to start under similar warm-up conditions. An example would be to drive the car fully warmed up to the Mall and let it rest while I shop for about two hours. When I try to start it for the return trip, it acts like it is flooded and doesn't want to fire. Just about the time passers-by begin to notice that this expensive car seems to have a no-start problem it fires up like nothing was wrong. It usually stammers a couple of times as I described above before I find my way out of the parking lot and then everything is normal once again... Any ideas? I'm befuddled! |

Not being familiar with that engine (but certainly that problem), I can only offer things to think about.
Your engine has a cold start valve. It's possible that it's leaking and causing the starting problem. I'm assuming that the injectors that weren't replaced have been checked. Could also be the fuel accumulator, though that would be the opposite of a flooded condition. Did they check the fuel pressure? Does the hesitation happen just during the first couple of minutes or so after starting?

I will ask about the Cold Start valve. I am mechanically inclined. Is it something I can change or test?
They said they tested all of the injectors and only rejected two of them. They replaced some seals or gaskets that they had to remove the upper intake to access while they were there. I doubt they actually checked the fuel pressure. It can and usually does hesitate as I first ease down on the gas to start off until it warms up. so, yes, the first few minutes. The hesitation (or miss, actually) only lasts for about 2 seconds until it starts pulling and then it is smooth until I stop at the next light and start off again. Hmm... I also have an intermittent missfire at idle. Random and errtic. Like it skips a beat every 3 or 4 seconds... This seems to continue even after it has warmed up. I figure that all of this is related. The car runs too good to have a serious problem, but this is just so annoying and a bit embarrassing when it almost won't start... |

my 300sl had a similiar problem-replaced all of the injectors and the cap and rotor-runs great

I just realized that I had not posted the final outcome of this post!
On a subsequent visit for service, my shop replaced yet another injector and everything settled out magically! It seems that the culprit was not among the first injectors replaced. Fortunately, this car uses the older fuel distributor type of injection system. Changing injectors on a 93 or newer model with the electronic injectors would have been quite costly!
