Rattle Trapped...
Greetings. First post after a year of enjoying this great forum. Sorry to rekindle the dreaded timing chain issue (and yes, I've read every post), but.....
I purchased a 1982 380SL last year w/ 80K miles. Chain has not been upgraded to dual row. At this point, no rattling whatsoever. Car runs great. Here come my issues: Getting mixed signals from Indy mechanics. One says "drive it - when it starts rattling, bring back & we'll check it." Another says, "I see 'em all the time w/150K miles and STILL have single row chain." It's almost as if they're reluctant to work on it. Yet another says, "Fix it tomorrow!" Here's my question...Are there any NON-horror stories? Does anyone out there still have single row chains in their's? What's the mileage? If yours broke, had it been rattling? I'm aware of the catastrophic risks involved with dice-rolling, but I'm also shy of the $4K to upgrade. (Single row was replaced at 40K mi.) Tell me it's gonna be ok, (or better yet, tell my wife). Thanks. |

I have no first-person experience, but I would recommend that you ensure that the engine oil is kept very clean, since the abrasives in dirty oil can accelerate chain wear.

It won't be okay and you need to get that fixed. There is no safe single row chain.
