Need Some Advice...

Okay, so I found a car online that I am instantly smitten with. It's (I'm assuming) genuine and rare. It's a 1980 450SLC 5.0, but according to my head, wasn't the 1980 a 500SLC? Anyways, I've attached a link... If one of you gets it, God bless! And best of luck! I really can't afford her now, but I just think this one is the cat's meow. (You can all take turns calling me crazy!)

I would love to know more about this assumingly rare model... I've never seen on in any other color BUT silver....

I got all sorts of info on this car on a disc i have, but I can't paste things off the disc, won't let me. Maybe this isn't unusual, not sure.

A few things I noted was that the production total for the 450SLC 5.0 and the 500SLC was 2,769.

On the "real" 450SLC 5.0's, the engine hood, trunk lid, and front and rear bumpers are aluminum. It should also have a small front spoiler and that black plastic rear spoiler, and on the sides, the area of the body under the trim strips should be painted gray (they make it sound like it's somewhat different in this regard than a regular 450SLC).

If you really need more info on these, let me know.

After looking at the ad some more, the seller never does really "talk it up" as being a 450 SLC 5.0. I assume someone somewhere along the line just stuck the "5.0" on there and that the car is actually a plain 450 SLC.

I agree with Gilly.

I did quite a bit of research on these cars. They're not terribly collectible, so are a good buy if you find a real one. MBshop has some good info. so I'd at least start a search here.

Off topic: Gilly, since it's up to an "orange alert" we are leaving the Union at 8:30 AM to catch the flight out of O'hare at 2:30. Otherwise the next VG is 10:00 and that's cutting it too close.

Well, there is no mention of it being a rare 5.0 despite the badge on the deck, though, it is painted a two-tone brown, rare if you ask me... Who knows, it's probably not a true 5.0... I just like the way it looks. Crazy seats, two tone brown and all...

FYI they changed from 450SLC 5.0 to 500SLC in March 1980, so it "could" be correct. Still an obvious omission like the rear spoiler makes me doubt.
I can't "pick up" on the fact that it's 2 tone that well (in the photos), someone may have sprayed the lower color when they tacked on the badge.
I agree the interior trim looks unusual. Could be a gray market car, just not a 5.0.

I stated looking for my 450slc about March of 2002. This car was on the net at that time. I remember the interior and the fact that it was parked in front of the white door. Check out www.collectorcartraderonline.com. I think it was originally on that site although it is not there any more. Sounds like these guys bought it and are reselling it.
