Locked Seatbelts...Not safe...Fix?

Hi again all. Hope your New Year was/is a safe one.

Ok, to the issue at hand (or is it seat?)

85 380sl: Seat belts are locking up. Last time it happened it was in the "open" position so it didn't bother me too much as I could still use the belt. But now it's locked in the retracted state. Mysteriously it started happening on both sides...????? Is this centrally controlled or merely a coincidence that both sides are acting up? Any tips on a fix.

BTW, a search yielded info on a '90 Sl...most likely a different animal.

I had a similar problem on my 85 380sl driver's side belt. I took the straw from my WD-40, put it on a silicon spray can, pointed it into the hole where the seat belt lives, sprayed the hell out of it, and wiggled the belt for a while. The belt now works fine.

Seat belts are one of the things we positively never try to repair,,, the other being gas tanks. When you think of the consequences, go buy a new one, What's your life worth?

I agree, however, I have seen information that states that a simple plastic fastner sometimes breaks and this leads to a binding of the belt. Having nothing to do with the actual centrifugal racheting mechanism. If it is this is the case I'll give it a go...if not I'll be the first to buy a new one.
