500SL exhaust configuration

I have a '82 500SL with a non-stock exhaust set up. Sounds like a '57 Chevy with glasspacks. Rear muffler not Mercedes part, one cat removed, the other still there. I need to quiet this car down. I plan to remove the other cat (live in non emmissions State), and replace the rear muffler with a stock Mercedes part. My question is do these cars also have a center muffler as the standard set up? Can any of you 500SL guys tell me how your exhaust system is configured. Thanks

The center muffler is the main cat.

I just had my exhaust re-worked. 1983 500sl (euro) and my config was as follows. Exhaust manifold - 2 down pipes from each side - combined into pre-cats 1 on each side - 2 pipes into main cat - 2 pipes out into rear muffler - 2 pipes exit to bumper.

My change was cut out pre-cats both sides - install new main cat with 2 pipes in and 1 large pipe out - new muffler with 1 in and 1 out - duel stainless tip installed at bumper exit.

I chose a mild deep tone - a little too loud in cockpit.

I can feel a power increase and all together happy about the install. Cost $650.00 vs. $1100.00 mb replacement parts and me doing the labor.

lj,

Don't know if it matters to you or not, but I have two pipes going into and coming out of both the cat and muffler.

In fact, I'm getting ready to have a muffler I picked up on eBay installed because the exaust tips on the current one are rusted out. Not sure I understand why it has happened this way, but the rest of the muffler is fine.

Those are good prices, for my euro I went custom.

I want the euro to maintain its designed proformance, while passing strick epa standard.

Must say, I really like the stock design. The custom shop said, not counting the CATS, he could only add 5HP... "great!"

I chose cost...
