Trying to figure out the trans problem on a 1998 e320. The TCM was full of trans fluid and I've been told that there is no way to clean them and expect it to work, so I'm in search of a TCM.

I also suspect the shifter electronics might be bad. I don't have the Star diagnostics so I'm just guessing at this point.

$50 tops for the TCM (or I can trade a Quality Pre-Owned benz part from my ebay store)

It's a no loss situation to clean the board with electronics cleaner , rubbing alcohol , flux remover. Oil alone won't cause a malfunction as it is an insulator, it is the fine metal particles that causes conductivity. There is a chance that the oil could break down components but I can't prove / disprove.

However, a description of the problem / reading of codes is needed before going much farther.

The TCM should be same enough from 97 to at least 00 that it would work for testing.

I cleaned the TCM once, but being SMT I'm sure some oilis still under the ICs. Just took it apart and sure enough, a little oil leaked out from under a device and is evident on the PCB.

I also agree, isn't much use going any further til I can find me a star diagnostic.
