wanted radiator for no turbo 300D 1979

Looks like I may be needing a radiator.

1979 123.130 chassis

3.0 liter engine non -turbo

auto trans, A/C and it has the oil cooler sitting separately on the driver side of the radiator.

I do have a radiator, though it is a used non-Behr, and there is a little mineral buildup. It is a little bit taller than the Behr radiator, and it works just as well (meaning, I didn't notice any change in cooling when switching to the Bosch).

I can get some pictures if you would like.

THANK YOU

Thank you t walgamuth and hetiticth,

I just came back from pick and pull and found two Behr radiators. One was muddy and so- so with fins crushed on several fronts (made in 2007) and the other was made Feb 2013, also a Behr. The latter was super clean.

Behr branded new ones are aluminum cores and plastic ends. My Valeo (NRP Holland) made in 2007 new lasted a whole 5 years with faithfull 2 yr. coolant changes with Mercedes coolant.

So barring this 'new' radiator being bad, I should be OK now.

Now I plan on keeping an eye out for a spare so I might still be posting on this forum later. If you have a clean one drop me an email. I have to justify shipping since I am on the lookout at pick n pulls now with no hurry, I hope.

Aggravating that this model radiator has been nixed.

I am not sure that the width of the 1982-1985 turbo version radiators will fit . Adding an expansion tank is not a big deal but the fit might not be that easy on a 300D, as advertised in some threads.

I don't know.

thx

Hi Partsman, evidently the 240D radiator is specific to the 240 D, so the 300D has another model number and size apparently.

Partsman and others: Turns out that the Behr radiator I pulled from a 300D at Pick n Pull (see above) was actually a 240D model Behr radiator. I also discovered from a MBZ dealer website that this 240D rad is OEM for the 123.130 chassis without A/C (non turbo 300D).

If you can wait a few weeks I should have one in storage, from a '79 300TD. With the filler car, all brass I think. I am not able to get to it just now, sorry hope you can wait a while after I return, at least shipping won't be required. DDH

I couldn't remember if the non turbos had a coolant recovery tank or not. I have seen one in some time.

Non turbo radiators have no coolant tank.....turbo radiators do fit non turbos, common upgrade as the non turbo radiators have became nla and the few out there are crazy pricey....but you will need to also install the expansion tank....

hey, i'm over in oakland, i believe i have an extra NA radiator from a yard. if i remember right its dirty but functional. let me check on that.

also in addition to the tank you'll also need the fan shroud from a turbo if you go that route...

swap feasible, really?

Cool Jay and Sleepstar, have you folks actually swapped a turbo w123 radiator into a non turbo 300D ?

I measured the Valeo turbo radiator for the W123 300D and it seems to be 2 inches wider than the stock non-turbo rad. (22 1/16 in. versus 20 5/8 in.)

2 inches gross width not just core width.
core width seems almost the same measurement.

I sense that the non turbo oil cooler may not fit at the side of a turbo w123 radiator.

I haven't personally did the mod...but I have heard of it being done....it is very simple....all you need is the expansion tank....and it will work....can't remember if it uses a different shroud or not off hand...

i've never tried it either, lots of people claim it can be done but i've never read about anyone actually doing it. i do believe that you'll need a turbo shroud since it its wider. not sure about any other fitment issues though.
