When the pad cracked on my 62 finny I took it off and covered it with leather that I got for free from the place I worked. It looked very fine and felt better than vinyl. It was pretty easy to do too.

What color is needed?

In my car it had a navy interior with a lovely ivory steering wheel with an ivory colored pad. The leather I used was a good match to the seats. The leather needs to be fairly thin. I'd call your local upholstery shop and ask if they have some scrap you can buy. The leather is pretty stretchy. It was not hard at all.

well when my vinyl disintegrated I took the center out and the pad underneath looked good, but it looked like the vinyl at one time was vulcanized in some fashion to allow for a seamless look. I can get the emblem out but the leather would have to somehow fold under the chrome ring and fasten to the back somehow . Perhaps an upholster shop could do it?

Thanks for your insight, I am pretty handy with wood and am contemplating creating a wood "pad" I know MB would not condone the safety of such a thing
