Large item shipping solution
I just figured out a way to ship a very large part to another PP member, Ian. It is a bumper strip for a 124 in a box that is 73" x 33" x 22" but only weighs about 25#.
I went to the fed ex ground website and worked with the computer and finally got a human on the line, named Diane at 1 888 393 9585 with Fed Ex freight who gave me a special discount to ship it for $242. I know that sounds like a lot but the second best quote I had was over $1,200. Tom

Shipping large packages
I'll bet you could have done much better, probably less than a hundred!
I've used BusFreighter a number of times with great results. It's a bit slower and if you're far from a bus depot you might opt to pay for a "to home " delivery or pick up but they can't be beat otherwise. I shipped two 113 rear fenders and a single front fender almost 75 lbs in a in a large box from RI to Toledo OH for a bit less than $100 dollars! A 126 limited slip diff in a plastic crate to Cali for about $60 a few years ago. Wrap it up with plenty of bubble wrap, box it up well as it can get tossed around pretty good, I use lots of packing tape and a second layer of filament tape at intervals in order to hold everything together even if it gets banged up in the process. https://www.busfreighter.com/ I'm surprised Ian must have wanted that bumper pretty bad, that shipping cost more than most used bumpers themselves cost around my area! |

$242 sounds high even for FedEX motor freight. We ship palletized freight with UPS Motor freight a few times a year, and even with $15K worth of insurance and a 225 pound ship weight, it's still somewhere around $250 or so... We don't even get any sort of discount due to our infrequent shipping pattern on motor freight.

I also recommend Greyhound for awkward pieces, though I think the weight limit is 100#

Bus Freighter is just discounted Greyhound. They subcontract and can often give better pricing. Greyhound bus is hard to beat on items with large dimensional weight(oversized but lightweight). Bus Freighter also offers pickup/delivery in bigger markets for a fee if you don't want to go the bus station. I've shipped bumpers and seats.

I've used Greyhound numerous times for bulky items like fenders, hoods, doors, etc. Always was less than $100.
Another alternative is uship.com which should also be inexpensive. Uship is basically like uber/lyft but for shipping large/heavy stuff. Fedex freight is definitely one of the more expensive choices.

Not bad. The people on the phone are realistic with most freight brokers.

I'll pile on for the dog. I've shipped big stuff like bumpers on Greyhound and I don't think it ever cost more than about $75 anywhere in the CONUS as long as the recipient was picking up at the terminal. I think they offered delivery but that was farmed out to the third party for more $$$.
