I have the standard 16" rims and I would like to know what is the best tire out there for the smoothest ride? I currently have Michelin MX4 tires on my '92 500SEL and I need to replace them.

Thank You

Among touring tires I have had great luck with Michelin Energy MXV4 aka Michelin MXV4 Energy Plus.

I just purchased a set of Continentals -- called "Touring Contact CH95B -- for my 95 C220. My rims are 15". I love the tire.

Go to www.tirerack.com for some interesting comparisons. I found that the Continental had very high marks in ride, noise, and wear.

Good luck to you.

I have driven both the Conti's and Michelin on identical vehicles under identical conditions and there really isn't any comparison in the total package the Michelins give you over the Conti's. The Conti's ride quietly but have a "twitchy" handling feel. Not a sporty or responsive feel, I mean twitchy and unstable. I recall seeing 2 cars at a shop that ran identically sized wheels/tires.(a pair of E320s) The set of Conti's had wheel-weights that were twice the size of the ones on the Michelin tires. On the plus side for the Conti's they are inexpensive and ride quietly. (no quieter than the MXV4's though) If I recall from the "Featured Car Feedback" forum someone who bought a new E430 complained of poor stability. Nothing seemed to be amiss mechanically, but the car was fitted with Continental touring tires. I have heard Bridgestone makes a good tire but I don't have alot of firsthand experience with their touring tires. In the end it comes down to what tire you like the "feel" of best. To each their own.
