incredible tire wear in 10 months!!!

I bought a set of Uniroyal tires last Oct 06 at Mart Le Wal. I have put about 10,000 miles on them... took them in today to rotate and balance and they told me all four tires need to be replaced due to uneven tire wire on their scale one rear tire was a 3, one rear was a 4, and the others fronts were 6 and 8 I believe on a scale of 10?

They told me 3 was the lowest acceptable level, and 2 has to be replaced.

Do I have a terrible alignment problem causing the backs to wear out so friggin' fast. Is it susupension.....wtf?

I kept the pressure regulated over the 10,000 miles. I don't hot rod, or drive rough, etc...

Sounds like an alignment can't hurt. I did the 123 at Firestone, the 126 at Sears, which has a warranty. It would seem the rears wouldn't be out that bad, but I'm not familiar with WM's scale of tire wear. How do they look to the naked eye?

How hard is the rubber on the Uniroyals? On RWD cars, rear tires to wear quicker, unless rotated every 5,000 miles. Softer rubber means better traction, but also higher wear.

Inner or outer wear? Front or rear? First set of tires on this car (have you owned it more than one set of tires)?

I rotate mine every oil change and I've gotten nearly 40k out of my Michelins and they're still going. Not down to the wear bars yet...

I'm at nearly 34k on my Michelin Destiny's and they have probably 80% of the tread still. I've rotated them maybe every 10-11k or so....my old goodyear tripletred's were shot at 18k....over half the tread gone, and a terrible vibration over 60mph. They changed them out on warranty.

If you are not getting any pulling or vibrations, it sounds more like they want to sell you a new set of tires.

Well,

The were the rear tires, visually they are noticeably different than the fronts were. I will look more closely this weekend, but it looked like all round wear, not inside or outside or middle only....

I don't have pulling to one side per se, but there is drifting left and right over a stretch a road.

This was the first set of tires I had put on this car. The PO sold me the car with cheap tires in terrible condition in the front I remember but outside wear I think

If it's even wear, you don't have an alignment problem. Or any problem for that matter. If they are evenly worn, you can wear them down to the wear indicators on the tire (a colored line scribed around, revealed at x tread depth).
Sounds like they're just trying to sell tires.

What was the temperature of the tire when you checked pressure?

If you checked the pressure when hot, they could have read 50 psi, then you could have taken 18 psi out. But when cold they would have been 32, so now you're actually driving on 14 psi. Seems to me pressure should be checked when the tires are cold.

Also, check out Goodyear's Comfortred tires. They're rated at 80,000 miles, and they'll be the first to tell you that you might get 60k, but they'll prorate them if you get less than 80k. They're supposed to be 20% quieter than other tires and reduce bump feel by 20% due to the kevlar stuff they use in it.

I just recently put on a set of Michelin Harmony tires, I think they are rated at 80k, with good all season ratings (important in the NW part of the country...)

They ride smooth, and track well so far, but now I just have to see how the alignment on my car treats them.

Harmony is the Michelin I bought as well. They're getting tired at 35-40k, but not worn out yet. I'm giving them 45... 50 max thousand miles... which still isn't bad service.

Car MFG's usually post less than MAX PSI for ride (meaning soft) quality. It also has to do with curb and loaded weight of the car.

I put wider wheels/tires on my Nissan 4x4. I noticed when I ran the tires ax MAX PSI, the tires wore out in the center faster compared to the edges like over inflation. When I lowered the PSI by 10, the replacements are wearing evenly.
