Need Tire Recomendation
Now that I'm apporaching the end of my front end rebuild project, I will need four new tires.
The car is a 1988 300 SEL. Since the car has the six cylinder engine I'm not too interested in high speed driving capabilities or anything along those lines. What I really want is a tire the gives a comfortable ride and is quiet. Mostly quiet. I'm kinda leaning toward Michelins, any else have an opinion or recomendation?

Let's see, I have Sumitomo HTR 200's on my 300D. They are grippy as all get out, but not quiet, so they are probably NOT what you're looking for.
On the 240D, I have some Dunlop SP 60's, which are quiet and ride nice, as well as having good traction in all weather conditions, and a high treadwear rating. You might want to check them out. I have Michelin Harmony tires on the 250. I haven't had the car long enough to develop a definate opinion of the tires. Ride and dry traction seem pretty good. The car itself is rather loud, so I couldn't tell you if the tires are quiet or not.

Chris -
We're enjoying the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S tires on both of our "underpowered" VW TDIs. They make a BIG difference in handling, especially in wet, compared with the OEM offerings. They are also pretty comfortable and quiet. I'm on my second set on the Golf. We just changed out the OEM MXV4 S8's on the Jetta, and the wife, who usually doesn't notice anything about the car, was very happy. Ray

I have tried others but I always come back to michelins.
I just bought four hydroedges (is that the right name?) for my 240/300d (1983). I can't wait to get them on the car. Tom W

The hydroedge is not reputed to be especially quiet, at least as it wears. That said, my 124 sedan is wearing a set and they seem OK. Only about 20K miles on them, so they are still young.
If you want Michelins I would suggest either their basic "S" speed rated passenger car tire or something from the MXV4 range if you want a speed-rated touring tire. I've had both on various Benz models over the years without any compliants. - JimY |
