They will not fit without spacers. I personally won't use spacers but some do. You'll want less than ET25 for a 16" from memory.

Care to explain why these specific wheels won't fit? ET37 with 7" width fits the W126.

Will these fit my 81 W126? (300SD)

with spacers yes.. But I think spacers are unsafe. Not everyone shares this viewpoint however.

They will be very close. Can't say for sure, but I have a set of 16 x 8 et40 wheels that just barely hit the tie rod ends on my 83 300SD.

Did you try it on your car? The CLK wheels that are ET30 do work, but I tried a set of ET37 wheels on mine and they won't work..... (on the front), rear is fine, although they look funny.

Why? At first, it might seem like a safety concern, but I cannot find a single incident of failure using quality spacers. H&R are TUV certified even.

Its a personal preference - each to their own really. I just feel if you drive these cars at the speeds they were designed for, I wouldn't want to put the additional stress on the lug bolts.

The only car I ever drove with them also had a vibration above 85mph and the handling felt funny. With proper wheels, was all fine again. Not really scientific, but it gives me the confidence in the car to not have a compromise solution when there are plenty of good looking wheels that fit properly.

just my 2c.

What was the width of the wheels and the tire size?

Where did the wheel hit the vehicle?

I believe that the "CLK" wheels are also ET37. As I said in the thread that Brian linked to I am running 16x7 ET 37 wheels on my W126 sedan with no spacers and no issues.

This is two years ago, so I don't recall exactly what it touched, it was very close, but it would touch (maybe on full lock??). The car came with these wheels on it (they were not the CLK ones, they had a 210 part number I think) and had these spacers. The car had funny vibrations etc above 85 from the front end, so I tried to take off the spacers to see if they were causing it. Anyway, in the end I got a set of the stock wheels and no more vibrations. The 16's (they were 16x7) had a 215 tire on them. I've never done any front end work on that car so the suspension doesn't feel nearly as good as on the other car - and perhaps a slightly worn suspension can be the difference from touching or not.

On my other 126 I just put a set of ASA type 8 ET23 from tirerack. Looks great, and the ride and handling is excellent.

Fronts are 17x8 ET36 ( with 225 45 17 ) , Rears are 17x9 ET 34 ( with 255 40 17 ), No Spacers they went right on. but these are 17" , you have 1/2" less clearance , With 16", some guys grind the knuckle a little, and the stick on wheel weights have to be towards the inside of the rim, not on the edge.

The only way you will know for sure is to go out and mount them and go for a ride. Many people said the wheels I have will never fit, go figure.

Is is possible that the outside diameter of the rim on the 17" wheel is outside the tie rod........and the tie rod lives in a bit of a recess in the wheel that is inside the rim? That's the only possibility that I see for an 8" rim to fit with ET34.
