tire rub
Hi,
when having the tires changed on my 83 300D, I noticed that on the passenger side that the strut(I guess thats what it is, it loooks like a shock, a tubular device for the suspension on the front) had a wear mark from the tire rubbing it when turned in one direction. Any idea what this may be? could it be from a lack of allignment? I know that there is quite a bit of play in hte steering wheel. Any idea what would cause this play? could it be related to the reason why there is this rub mark? Any info on what might be the cause of this rub, and thus the fix for it would be appreciated. Thanks JMH |

?!?!?!?!?!
How did you get your tire to start rubbing on your shock? When I rebuilt the front end on my 300D it was physically impossible to do that. Are you sure it's a tire mark?.

maybe not
well then, perhaps it is not. I dont know what else it could be though... Any ideas? the paint/coating on the piece was gone, rubbed down to the metal... it was in a kidney bean type shapeas if it was tire related.
I have no idea what it may be, but any idea would be appreciated. Thanks JMH |

hmmmm, got a picture of it?
you could check it by turning the tire all the way to the left or the right and see if it is touching. If it isn't you could further test by bouncing that side up and down and check if it rubs.

I just replaced most of the front suspension items on my car and from what I've seen, if the tire is rubbing on the shock, you've got some serious problems. I really don't think the car could be driven if that were the case. My guess is that the shocks are really worn and the plastic sleeve that fits around the top is rubbing on the shock body when the suspension is fully compressed. The shop that was mounting your tires should bring such a thing to your attention and be able to give you an indication of what the problem is. If they said nothing about the mark, it may mean it was not at all significant or it may mean that they are not competent enough to give a visual inspection.

I also would say worn-out shocks...There can be a lot of side-to-side play in a worn out shock absorber. The rear shocks on my SD have similar rub marks on them, and they are INSIDE the SPRING, so there's no way it's a tire mark!
How long since you put new shocks on the car? Mike
