Best thing to do about threads stripped on rear wheel hub?
Sam's auto tire shop stripped the rear wheel stud thread in the hub. What is prefered fix? They plan to pay for repair but I want to be sure it is done correctly? Advise needed.

Stripped Hub
There in my opinion are several options but since they are paying for it why not have them replace the hub with a good used one or a new one.

Someone else just had a complaint about Sams. I think it was some kid with an air wrench that was tightening the bolts instead of loosening them. He was snapping them off.
A torque wrench is an important thing to have on these vehicles. To answer your question, I'm no expert, but I would say "hub replacement." The entire hub. I normally don't let anyone take the wheels on and off on my vehicles. I take the tire shop the loose wheels. Can't avoid it during a safety inspection, but on those days I take along the torque wrench to redo the wheels afterwards. Ken300D |

Rear Axle Hub
Quote:
Get Sams to pay for a new rear axle shaft flange (photo), new spacer and bearings (both sides if the have mucked up both). The only way to sort it out.

I should have said "on 87 300E"
I don't know if it would have been different on each model.
Does that spacer and wheel bearing have to be replaced on my model/year too? I have to talk to the repair shop on Friday. Any info would be appreciated. DanielW |

The set up is the same. The spacer can only be used once. Make sure it is done by someone who knows about Mercs hubs, as if the hub nut is overtighten the spacer squashes and is not good slacking the nut then, the hub would have too much end ply. The bearings have to be extracted from the hub (racers) and the flange. Wouldnt advise to reuse them afterwards!. regards
