My car is currently fitted with the original alloy wheels and handbook specification tires 195-65-15.
I would like to fit wider ones but not go to the additional cost of changing the alloy wheels. What will safely fit?
I thought about 215-60-15 are these too big? Or will 225-60-15 fit ?

Larry, on stock wheels I fit 215/60-15 tires fine. I've also used 205/60-15s. Tire rack carries the Dunlop SP 5000 in the 205 size and an H rated Dunlop in the 215 size: both good values.

Unhappy

Hi, I just bought new wheels for my 320 CE-93. I have been reading a lot of posts here and I thought I know what would fit my car.... Last year I mounted original MB mudguards in the front. Now when I drive straight forward and apply the brakes a little I rub them, this also happens when I go over smaller holes in the street.

My car still has the stock suspension, if I put weight on the front I can almost push down the car all the way to the mudguards. I will remove them and see if that helps. The wheels are "Alutec DTM 7" 7,5x17 ET35 with "Kumho 712" 225/45ZR17 91W tires.

* Does the 24V have different track width than non 24V?
* Do I need to replace the springs in the front?
* If I lower the car 30mm (using Koni kit) do I need
to roll or flare the fenders?
* Are the tire diameter bigger fro Kumho 712?

Thanks for any help! /Patrik

Hi Larry,

If you have the stock wheels, you have a 6.5 X 15 inch wheel. Yes, the 215/60-15 and 205/60-15 tires will fit, but IMO the 215's "looks" too big (not wide) for the car....on a 6.5 inch rim, they look "pregnant".

Try the 205/60-15 first. Plus, there are TONS of tire choices in this size. If they don't work for you then call Luke at Tirerack and order some 16 or 17 inch wheels - and go to a wider tire. The 215/60-15 tires will cause your speedometer to provide a false reading (maybe only a few mph difference).

One exception. If you find some 15 X 7 inch wheels, the 215/60-15 will fit better than on a 15 X 6.5. 225/60-15 are too big.

Hope this helps...

with a 225/45/17 if you hav not rolled the fenders, the chances are you will rub.

With the stock 15" Wheels, click the cars tab, and find the sportline section. The tire size for that should work, otherwise what the others have said should work fine.

Lightbulb

Hi, the tires still rubbed the plastic side panels so the shop put on Kumho 712 in size: 215/45ZR17. The steering also felt better/lighter than with 225/45ZR17. These doesn't rub, but if I fully load the car I would roll the rear fenders and probably the front fenders aswell.

MB sells a 'AMG fender spacer kit' which cost 130 SEK; 2 spacers to put on the bottom of the front fenders. They also sell a 'spring travel limiting washer kit' which cost 340 SEK; you mount the washer onto the piston rod over strut bumper. I subscribed on Alldata for my car to get the document on how to roll the fenders etc. I did PDF-files of them, download them here:

MBNA 40/025A, July 1995, 3 pages, (43 kb) http://www.geocities.com/fun_4_y/mercedes/mbna040_025a.pdf
Work instructions 332, Model 124, 18 pages, (286 kb) http://www.geocities.com/fun_4_y/mercedes/wi332_model_124.pdf

I could also upload PDF-files for Model 129, 140, 201, 202 if anyone wants them. Regards /Patrik

I have two sets of 215/60R15 tires on 6.5X15 stock rims, they fit nicely, 6.5 inch rims actually are used as standard rims to measure section width for 215 tires.

The size is difficult to find, I am now running Bridgestone RE950s, though they are H rated, I feel they perform no worse than V rated tires, wet traction is superb, no more wheel spin in rainy days.

215 tires improved the handling of my 400E dramatically, I would never go back to stock size tires.
