Increasing tire width w123 300cd
Hi MB colleagues,
I am buying a 1984 300CD and thinking of replacing the existing tires ( 195 70R 14 ) by 205 70 14. I would appreciate any comments / experiences you may have which you could share. Thanks in advance Jorge |

Years ago, my brother upgraded the wheels on his 6.9
I was the recipient of the stock bundt alloys and tires. Specs were: wheels 6.5 inch wide 14 inch dia, tires were 215/70. They cleared the front suspension, barely. 205/70 will be fine, I've done that with 6 inch wide bundts with no clearance issues.

I’m running 215 70 14 which is a taller tire than most everyone runs on the w123 300d .The positives - rides higher , feels smoother , gives a better look I feel on a w123. . The negatives - rubs the fender at heavy bumps ( knocked the lip back on both frt fenders a bit too clear , no rub in the back , tires sqeel on heavy turns at speed , more side wall gives less response to performance .

Given the above I would not do this tire on a coupe , the 215 70 14 would give not enough road feel when it comes to guessing your heavier turns . A spongey tire and shorter car might not be a good combination.

The perceived negatives derive not from the width (215), but from the aspect ratio (/70). A shorter sidewall (/60 aspect ratio) in the same width will provide better feel and response. |
