Like most, I could not stand the runflats on my 2014 E250 bluetec and put on regular tires. Currently no spare...but....here is my thought...

I have a 16" donut from a VW sportwagen. It has the same bolt pattern as the mercedes does (5 x 112MM). My thought was to replace the rubber on the donut rim with a T135/ 90 R16. That puts it only 1/10th of an inch less in diameter than the 245/45 R17.

So I have the correct bolt pattern, correct tire size...what else am I missing?

Has anyone else tried using a VW rim on their mercedes? Thoughts?

I can't imagine a mercedes donut spare would be all that different than the VW.

I had a 2014 GLK250 Bluetec. They didn't put runflats on those cars in Ontario at least. But there was also no spare. The tire size was also not that common.

W used our GLK for trips South. So what would we do if we had a tire damaged while driving down there? Especially if there was no replacement tires available for days?

More compact than full spare, but not small! The GLK350 had a well for the spare, but the Bluetec used that space for DEF storage.

We ended up carrying our CAA and Credit cards when driving locally! On trips, we put the spare in a custom made bag and put it in back behind driver's seat. Never had to use it, and traded car once the Bluetec issue blew up. Also because US dealers wouldn't honour the MBCanada extended warranty we had.

Where do you plan on storing your spare? Presumably E250 at least has some trunk space?

I am currently storing the spare in the trunk...plenty of space. I wound up buying a new donut rim and installed a new spare tire on it.

Orignally I had the DEF disabled be cause it was being problematic. The plan was to remove the tank and put a full size wheel in there.

Then Mercedes showed up at my door and replaced everything, handed me a check and a 4yr 48,000 mile warranty.

Some day, after the warranty expires, I'll get rid of that tank. It will be about 15 years old then and I doubt anyone will care.
