Painting wheels?
I am getting a nice set of used Michelins for my 300D and I am thinking that I may take the wheels and have the old tires taken off then I will take the rims home to clean and paint them as they are flaking/peeling the factory paint. Any suggestions on painting the wheels? Preparation? Cleaning? Etc? Factory 14" alloys. I'm talking rattle-can paint here folks, not anything professional. Thanks, RT

I considered doing this at one time, and found that the archives are full of info on this subject.
Try a search on repainting wheels, refinishing wheels, etc. It appears the paint is available from Wurth and www.griotsgarage.com Good luck.

I cleaned and painted my bundt wheels on my 380 SL. I used Wurth Paint and the clearcoat. The hardest part was the cleaning and prep. If I had it to do over again I would have the wheels blasted not with sand but one of the softer blasting materials. Painting is really easy with the Wurth paint and it is a great product, I would not use anything else. Even with my less than best prep my wheels look 100% better until you get real close and then you can see the flaws I left. Do a search here and you will get a lot of knowhow.

Good advice aand I agree....Wurth is the way to go. I'd also have the wheels bead or walnut shell blasted. BUT you must use the appropriate primer before laying paint on the bare metal. Again, go with the Wurth primer.
Believe it or not I asked local paint shops for an estimate on 4 wheels. I almost choked when the range was between $45 and $250(!!!) per wheel.

Just had mine done on the 1991 560 sel at a local body shop. Came out very nice and charge me $150. Also had him repaint the rear bumper which had lots of small dings with the yellow underbody showing. Came out like factory new. Said he had to use a special paint that was flexable and that he lost money on the job. Charge me $200
