feeler: '87 190d turbo with 5 speed, interest?
Hey everyone,
I'm thinking of selling my black '87 190d turbo with 141k miles, which I did the 5 speed swap on a couple months ago. I'm getting ready to move and will need to thin down to one car. Not sure which one I'll keep, but this seems like it'd be the easiest sell. I'll post some pictures later. here are some details (the car is in Brooklyn, NY): - black on grey mb tex. paint is good with small dings and scuffs here and there (it's a new york city car) but nothing severe . no serious rust though there is some rust in one of the jackpoints (though I may fix this before selling) - pretty much loaded options-wise, power seats, sunroof, etc. everything works with the exception of the cruise control and the AC. - brand new tires, muffler will be new before selling. recent pads and rotors, fan clutch, delivery valve seals - 5-speed manual transmission installed and working great. - engine always fires right up and runs great, even with the recent cold. car is very quick with the 5-speed, even with the original differential. that's all I can think of for now; like I said, I'll post pictures later when I have a chance. just looking to see what if any interest there would be and what kind of money people think it's worth and/or would be willing to pay. thanks, dave

I may be interested. I've been thinking about a diesel benz for a commuter. What do you get for fuel millage? Does it have the same 2.5TD thats in the later model w124 300Ds? The tranny refit you mention, what is the tranny from?
Thanks ERRM |

Hi,
I think I get between 30 and 40 mpg, I'm not exactly sure. I would guess that it's closer to 40 now that I've got the 5 speed in there. sorry to be unsure, I've never really done the math. I know I can go from Brooklyn to Torrington, CT and back on half a tank, which is about 240 miles on maybe 6 gallons? that's 40mpg, so I guess it's probably somewhere around that on the highway. the 5 speed is from a mid-80's 190e 2.3. the flywheel is from a diesel w201. I actually did a quick and dirty writeup of the conversion on this site, here's the link: '87 190d turbo 5-speed conversion oh, and yes, the om602 is the same 2.5 turbo that's used in the early 90's w124 diesels. I think the primary difference is that the turbo setup is different on those cars, and they have more electronic control of the engine. Mine has the ELR electronic idle control, which works, but that's it for electronics engine-wise. thanks for the interest, any more questions let me know, Dave

a couple of pictures
just took these, there's still lots of snow on the car, plus it could use a wash. but you get the basic idea.
the small trim piece that's missing on the front fender just needs to be reattached with some new clips... I have it and will be doing that soon. - Dave

whoops, sorry guys, I didn't realize this thread had been bumped since February. I apologize for not responding, I just hadn't checked back after initial interest seemed to wane.
The car will be for sale some time soon. After what seemed like lukewarm interest after my initial posting, I decided to work on some more stuff and get it completely sorted out before putting it on the market again. In the interm I've replaced the diff with a 3.27 and swapped in a matching speedo (this is a big improvement over the 2.65). I swapped in a nice dashboard to replace the original one that had a few cracks. I've also collected the lower trim from a post-'89 model and plan on putting that on after eradicating the beginnings of rust around a couple of the jack holes. I also need to replace a couple of camber struts that were causing uneven tire wear. Once all this is done, plus touching up a few dings and scratches, I'll feel better about selling it and will post here again. I'll probably be asking somewhere in the $4500-$5000 range as far as price goes. I don't know what the story is with the AC, but the compressor may be good as the PO told me he'd had one put in but that didn't solve the problem. It might be the ACC unit, in which case I've got a couple of spares to try out, but haven't gotten around to it yet. thanks, dave

I'd be interested if the car wasn't on the wrong side of the country.
