The Fuse, The Fan and the Harness

I have a 2000 ML320 which has the Aux Fan Fuse 44 problem.

Fuse 44 has had a 30 AMP fuse since day 1, for the time being I am replacing with another 30AMP until I can get advice otherwise.

Having read through the forums I see that Mercedes have produced a upgraded harness, but the 'recall' only applied to 2000 ML up to VIN ending in A145272.

this according to Gillys usual superb advice in thread...

Fuse #44 Question

my VIN ends A1547** so to my question (s)

1 - Would my ML have the updated Harness?

2 - Is there anyway to tell for sure?

If the answer to 1 is Yes and/or per 2 there is a way to verify. I can assume I can just put the 40AMP fuse instead of a 30.

Just so everyone knows I am fairly sure though I will double check as I have the Mercedes Warranty sheet for the car (Cannot remember the proper name) that the harness was not replaced under warranty.

As always Many

Do not put a higher rated fuse in there. You risk a fire unless the wire can handle it.

What does the fuse list (under the lid) say is supposed to be there? I'd be inclined to say it's got the updated harness. I'll put more brainpower (ie caffeine) into this later.

If the harness upgrade was done under warranty it would appear on your Vehicle Master Inquiry (VMI) which your dealer can bring up on their computer. If the upgrade had been done you would have a 40amp #44 fuse in your fuse box, not the 30amp called for on the fuse box lid.

Gilly - Duh! you know I didnt look, let me double check and I will get back to you.

OK I checked the fuse cover and it says 30A

Azinn - VMI That was what I was thinking of (It was late when I was typing), I have a copy of the VMI from when I bought the car, I am 95% certain that it hasnt been done, but I will double check when I get home. Having said that I had the Cat replaced by the dealer last year, so there is not telling that it might have been done then, having said that they would have put the updated fuse in at the same time so that kills that theory

Q - thats why I have a supply of 30A for the time being, I will NOT put a 40 in there until I am 100% that its the right harness.

David.

David F. . . . . . .

I have a 2000 ML320 with a serial # just above yours and I have no problem with my 30 amp fuse. Believe in Gilly.

Gave this some thought. My best suggestion would be to go ahead and install the 40 amp fuse based on the vehicle ID being well over the number given in the bulletin. Maybe MB was slow to get the amperage updated in the box. Doesn't seem likely, I almost recall there may have been an additional bulletin concerning this though, I can double check that idea.
The only other thought is you can examine the left headlight wiring harness to see if there is an addition harness taped to it for the aux fan, the reason is if the new harness was added similar to how it was done at the dealership, you'd see this additional harness taped to the original harness. I assume they'd do this before the harness was installed.
VMI wouldn't show anything if the vehicle isn't in the affected VIN range, your VIN is too high for this campaign.
