Fuel gauge suddenly inaccurate
Hi,
After filling my fuel tank to the very top, the fuel gauge in my '01 ML320 (110k miles) reads a little above 3/4 of a tank. This just started happening on long trip. Is there a reasonable way to figure out whether the gauge is bad or the sender is bad? .. or something else? Thanks, dac

My '98 is doing the same thing...someone said that it requires replacing a $1,000 set of senors and pumps.
The accuracy at the lower end of the scale seems to be off by ~3 gallons. When the low level comes on, I seem to have ~6 gallons of fuel remaining. Is this the same for yours?

Fuel guage 3/4
I thought that was fixed after 1999.
- There are threads on how to modify the float so tit doesnt get stuck. The float is on the fuel pump under the rear seat. My 1999 would only go to 3/4 when full/ . I decided to go with the upgrade. Replacing the Fuel pump (under $200 ish with my labor ) cured mine. I just filled up today..goes right to the Full Mark. Who told you about all that money and sensors ? I also did the fuel lines and filter. it was about $300 total. Last edited by sdanville; 11-19-2004 at 12:23 PM. Reason: sattachemnt |

Can't recall who said that, but it was on either this forum or the Benz Bin one. Perhaps that grand is the dealer doing the work. What is the fuel pump upgrade?
I am still learning about these as I have only had mine for less then a month.

rookie
the upgrade is a fuel pump that the float works.
and they made redesigned fuel lines and filter so you dont have to remove the seat to change the filter. I dont know why, ya change it every 100,000 miles...so who cares...But I did it anyways... I did mine at 105,000.

Well, that's interesting info re: the fuel pump/float upgrade.
I had to have the fuel pump replaced about a year ago. Suddenly it wouldn't start - no warning at all. I took it to the dealer (mistake) and $750.00 later I had a new fuel pump, lines, filter. I'll have to look for the threads on how to modify the filter. Thanks,

You should always check here First.
$750.00 vs my $300.
That's $450.00 for tuition. I am confident they upgraded your lines and filter. I hate to think they used the unreliable old style pump// but why else would it act that way...

Any idea how would I be able to tell if the newer
