2006 ML 500 drive
I happened to stop by the Dealer in Birmingham Thursday. The ML Plant is just a few miles to the west. They had just brought back a 2006 ML 500 for them to put some miles on. Many are running around here. A big effort to identify any problems. This was loaded as all launch un its will be. Very nice to drive and fit and finish very good. Had keyless start, well you puch a button with a card in a slot. Gearshift on column is a touch up for reverse, touch down for drive. Can't say I would buy this feature if it was an option. More room in rear seating, easy to fold down seats. Rear storage was a disappointment as the sides curve down and floor space width wise is less than before. Spare tire under rear surface in rear with an area for the owners manual-strange. Overall very nice but my 2002 E320 4-matic has more useable room and with rear flip up seats can haul 7. I think they will sell many of these units. Will be some good deals on the old stlye as many owners will be trading, which they are bracing for. This was silver exterior. Looked good in person. Will be at dealers in a month. They said when the model year changes the diesel will be available.

2006 ML 500 drive
Returned Sat with SWMBO. Of course she loved it. Had the wagon loaded with outdoor project stuff. Did some quick swapping between the two vehicles and it would appear that the ML is about 4" narrower in rear than E Class wagon. Depth would be about a foot less I'm guessing. Just too lazy to find the specs right now. We did look for about 3 minutes for the battery. I thought I read they might have two. Not under the hood, did find the positive post for jump starting, not under pass rear seat. There is a compartment on pass side rear with slotted plastic"bolts" that we could not open for lack of a tool, quarter etc. It or they may be there. Would have loved to post pics but when you recharge nonrechargable batteries and put them in your digital camera.... It also has 18" tires, nice wheels. No one knows the options this has so I can't say what the ML350 will have. Anyway they are making a bunch and trying to discover as many little problems as they can. 3 weeks and they will be at a Dealer near you. They also said people are ordering with non launch options with no idea of cost. Sales person also said these will not have low range transfer case as present one has now. Haven't verified that yet either, but couldn't find the switch!

No low range. The 2006 Sport Utility Vehicle (oxymoron) is not intended for off-road use.
