ok, autozone says 'P0748.' 'pressure control solenoid electrical'.
'what do it mean, boss?
is this a $5000 part? or a loose wire/bad connection?
thanks in advance

There are 6 electrical solenoids on the valve body. Electrically 1 of them isn't working properly. 4 of the solenoids are less than $50 list & the most $$$ is less than $200. A good MB shop that has working knowledge of automatics should be able to make repair for less than $400.

well, my nearest mb shop (54 mi) is not interested in repairing the valve body. they want to replace the whole thing for $1150.(!!) I suspect their repair shop is a major profit center for the dealership. they seem to know how to maximize the bill with minimal man-hours of effort! wonder if they'll give me the old one back, so i can repair it myself later and have a spare? FAT CHANCE!! the next nearest mb shop is 65 miles the opposite direction.
and their reputation is not exactly 'unblemished' either......

at any rate, i have an ohmeter and know how to use it. is it possible to look at the external electrical connector for an open solenoid coil to discover which one it is?

At the transmission electrical connector on the trans side (male pins).

Measure resistance between pins 6 & 2 to check modulator solenoid

Measure resistance between pins 6 & 10 to check the shift pressure solenoid.

BOTH(either) should be from 4-8 ohms! Good luck!

The MB part number for those solenoids(either one) is 203-270-00-89 & have a list of $184 each!

The part number for a reman exchange valve body is 140-270-06-06-88 & list for that is only $343!!!!!! They come with new solenoids! Takes about 1-1.5 hrs to install valve body!
