Question On a ML when the needle is at the zero line how much gas is there.

hay guys and gals,

I just drove home in my ML. The gas guage needle is just at the zero line. Just woundering if I have enough gas to get to my favoriate gas station, 15-20 miles away.

I know the gas light was on all day but I though I though for sure I had enough gas to come home and go back to the gas station for sure, I ran a extra trip to the store today.

anyone have experience driving when the needle is on zero.

You're probably OK.....but I think I would skip my favorite gas station and just get to the CLOSEST station. To ease your mind you can get an idea of your situation by using the overhead computer and convert the display from miles to kilometers. Instead of just flashing FUEL, it will give you a ballpark figure of Kilometers left till EMPTY.

In all my miles, and with all the gas gauge problems the ML's are prone to......this display has been extremely accurate, and I have never run out of gas..Once it gets down to 0 KM, I would guess your pretty much running on fumes !!

thanks for the info, but I don't have a trip computer with the distance left.

Thanks for the info, but I don't have a trip computer with the distance left. So, I have to rely on the guage.

I ran out of gas once in my 99 ML 320. The needle was less than half way through the lighted section of the gauge. I thought it would at least get near the bottom of the lighted section before it ran out. Now, I pay attention when the light comes on.

Good luck.

I'd love to rely on the trip computer to determine how much fuel is left, but when the needle enters the "lighted" portion, the computer just flashes "FUEL". Could there be anything dumber? That's when you REALLY need to know exactly how many miles you have left! Do they not all do this?

Kevdog...

If you have the overhead display.....when you convert from MILES to KILOMETERS it WILL countdown number of KM's left...very useful.....

Check the owners manual for specific directions....

Kevdog,

In your owner's manual you should find a specification of how many gallons are left when the reserve light comes on. I have owned a '98 and an '00 ML320. For both the number of gallons left is specified as 3 gallons of usable fuel.

How far you can go on the 3 gallons is predicated by driving conditions, your driving style, vehicle condition, etc. A trip computer can take into account a certain amount of this and will calculate a close estimate of the number of miles left for the gas you have left.

With freeway driving I have traveled close to 100 miles from the time the reserve light came on. I don't believe the reserve light sensor is coming on at exactly 3 gallons of course, but at least it is erroring in my favor. Generally when the light comes on I estimate the miles left by using the average MPG I get. Then I will factor in what kind of driving I am doing; freeway, city, etc. and estimate miles left. Of course I could simply switch the computer over to miles left but I never think of that.

Lest one thinks I run the tank to reserve levels all the time, I have done it mainly when traveling to our neighboring state to the west where gas varies from 16 to 35 cents per gallon cheaper than our state.

I chicken out.

I chicken out, on my way to the hardware store this Sat about 5 miles. I got about 5 gallon of gas. Did not want to be stuck out of gas in a triffic jam. It was not that much more.

More future references.

Let me know if poeple have gotton more than 100 miles (or more than 4 gal) from when the light goes on.

Or better yet let me know if people was able to fill the thank with more than 19 gal (19 gal I think is the listed capacity of the ML tanks none AMG). I think the most I have ever gotton in the tank with out over filling it was 18 and change.

I have "stuffed" 20.0 in one time, 19+ just recently and 18.9 as my 3 highest amounts.
