Wheel Allignment - Special tools required? Speciality Tools?

ML 320 2002 Km 120 000
Are there
* special tools required for Front and rear wheel allignment or simply one tool required?
* Are the same tool/s used for rear wheel allignment?
* Can one purchase these special tools? if so where? How much?
* Or are they simple to make or even simpler if you have a engineer friend?
* Do you have picture?

it will be cheaper if you just take it to a good alignment shop or the dealer.

Some non - dealer allignment shops do not possess the said tool

My thoughts were that if one had such tool/tools you can take it anywhere for allignment as the many shops will have the specs but not the tool

The vehicle has to sit on an alighment rack. I don't believe there is any simple handheld tool to do that job. Any shop can do repairs but not all shop can do alignment work.
