Where to plug in code reader

Where does one plug in the code reader? The check engine light just came on in my '98 ML. I understand the boys at Autozone will read the code for free, I just don't know where. TIA

FYI - all cars with OBDII software have the jack in a standard spot (under the dash on the left side of the drivers footwell). So, if your car is post '96, the big rectangular socket is there.

Question: So will any OBDII code reader be able to read the code from the ML's or are they different?

If so the next time I see one on sale I will get one.

thanks

OBDII codes are generic and can be read from any vehicle by any code reader. It's the proprietary ones that you can read without some very expensive (for now) equipment.

So you could buy a generic one and it will plug in and possible read some of the codes?

thanks

Yes. I use one regularly on my 2000 G500 and my other cars.
