99 ML 320 fusebox location and check engine light is on...

So my engine light comes on today as I pull out of the driveway and I did notice a clunk when I engage drive which usually only happens in low range but the indicator is not on. It pulls out normal but does not shift thru the gears. So I actually think the tranny is in "limp home mode" which engages 2nd gear only. I notice the auxilary lights indicator does not come on either so I suspected a blown fuse but I don't know where the fuse's are located! I was going to check the tranny fluid but there appears to be a red lock on the dipstick for the tranny that says MB tech only! So I don't know if I can pull this out! At least the truck still drives and I'm only a few blocks to work. I tried engaging/disengaging low range and it does not appear to work/do anything.

Ok I found the fuses under the hood and they appear to be ok but still no aux light and low range does not engage disengage. I'm going to take if for a short drive around the block...

Could be a bad solenoid in the transfer case (a common problem). Do you use low range ever/often?

No...I have never used it but not sure about others in my family...how about a bad relay in the fuse box--not sure there is one for the transfercase but I can check it if there is one...

DCF,
Is the solenoid externally accessable/testable? My brothers wife's husband specializes in later model MB (not a dealer) but we may ask him if this is something he can check or perhaps he has a code reader. I did unhook the battery and the Check Engine light is now out but it still won't shift and now the radio needs the anti theft code which I don't know--my Dad should have it as keeps good records--he bought it new.

I have exact same problem

Hi Jason,
I also have 99 ML320 with the exact symptoms as your car (stuck gear, engine light on). Mine started acting up gradually this past month, like once a week, then more often, like once a day. Normally, if I turn off the ignition key, and restart, then thing will be OK. However, tonight it stuck at 2nd gear, and will not get out of it no matter what I tried. I even tried to go to low range and back, but it makes no different at all. I wonder how you resolve the problem on your ML320? I will probably have to take mine to the shop tomorrow (have not decided whether to the MB dealer, or some outside shop), and like to know before hand what was possibly wrong with it. Thanks for your reply.

Ttran

I would pull the low beam bulbs and check for burnout.
