1999 ML320 sudden lack of shift

Hello

This is posted for a customer.

1999 ML320 sudden lack of shift.

32 point MB dealer service followed by unexplained failure of transmission to shift.

One hour later normal function.

Three hours later parked at mall, came back to vehicle, half way out of clean level parking lot, loud crunch/thump, described as if running over large road junk, transmission stopped shifting, and further attempts are futile.

Suggestions needed.

Since the truck will move...I would have the trans & transfer case computers scanned for codes!
