2002 ML320 - "Low Range" light flashes at startup

Morning Gentz-

Noted on the wife's ML the low range light flashing during initial startup. It flashes as the other idiot lights go through their test sequence then it goes off.

All else is normal, drives fine, etc.

Any insight, as always, greatly appreciated. TIA!

the transfer case motor has lost syncronization engage and disengage low rang about 10-15 times and that should take care of it every oil change or so engage low range a few time to keep it from doing it again.

NOICE! Thanks. Phew, love it when a bullet's dodged...

...it's not often!

No surprise then on the desynchronization - it's not like she's *ever* engaged low! I think I have like 1x the 1x I got to burn around in deep snow in it.

Again, thanks!

Hmmm... Wis... I have pressed the button about 1,000x and it did not cure the issue. Low range will not even engage, just blinks then goes out - on top of the blink at start up issue.

Anyone else have any other suggestions? Again, greatly appreciated...

IF the motor would not re-synchronize then most likely it is having a problem.

Reading codes from the transfer case would be in order. Replacement of that motor is simple.

My ML430 low range light was flashing 3x at start up. I was told in order to turn off the low range you must put the car in neutral, put your foot on the brake and push the low range button to deactivate.

Thumbs up

Thanks mars23 - that worked a charm

I managed to reset the low range flashing by putting my ML350 (2004) into neutral and hitting the low range switch twice - once to engage it and then again to disengage it. I could feel and hear it cycling through. I then restarted the car a couple of times to test that the dash light didn't come back on and so far so good...and just in time for the snow.

Note to future troubleshooters - the car must be in neutral, not park to re-cycle the switch.
