ML 320 1998 AC/Compressor help

Hello everyone. When I switch the AC on after starting the engine, the blower starts but the AC/compressor does not turn on. In order to start the AC, I have to turn the AC button off (keeping the blower on) for a few seconds & then turn it on. While driving the car the AC again trips a couple of times especially during the first 10 – 15 minutes & especially when the car is very hot. & I have to repeat the above (turning the AC button off & on) in order to make it on. Moreover if I run the AC’s Fan at a speed of 1 or 2, the compressor turns off after some time, but if I let the AC run on full fan speed, the compressor does not turn off. Appreciate if someone could help me finding the cause of this problem. Also can someone please advise me the recommended AC Gas pressure?

Fuse no. 44 is good. I have noticed that the aux fans do not run when I start the AC and the AC does not blow cold air, but I can see the AC clutch running. The aux fans starts after a long time sometimes by itself or by switching the AC button off & on a few times. I have also noticed that when the Aux fan starts, the AC starts blowing cold air. Also while driving the car there are various instances when the AC starts blowing hot/normal air & then again I have to switching the AC button off for a few seconds (keeping the air fan/blower running) & then turn it on to start cooling.
