Resetting FSS + Cabin Air in 04 ML350

Well in the interest of avoiding the dealership where possible,
I have gone back to DIY mode for all my cars where feasible.

2 questions:

1) What is the reset procedure for the FSS? Seems like I've seen
various steps here in the forums for different models.

2) where is the cabin air filter located? Below glove box, or
in glove box? There is a Purolator model filter C38184 -
anybody used this?

Here is a link I found that shows how to replace the cabin
air filter.

http://www.pureoil.com/smartlink/?partnum=C38184

This link is useful for other cars and parts in general.

I have a 2002, ML320 and am trying to reset the FSS. I used the following steps and was very unsuccessful.

1. Turn key to position 2.

2. Within 4 seconds press button 1 twice.

3. The present status for days or distance is displayed. Within 10 seconds turn key in steering lock to position 0.

4. Press and hold button 1, while turning key in steering lock to position 2 again. The present status for days or distance is displayed once more. Continue to hold button 1. After aproxtamely10 seconds a signal sounds, and the display shows 10,000 miles for approximately 10 seconds.

5. Release button 1.

After numerous attempts and frustration, am I required to purchase the FSS reset key?
